A person who writes "copy" is referred to as a Copywriter. Copywriting is an area of marketing which focuses on written material for marketing and advertising.
Examples of copy include e-mail ad campaigns which promote products or services, written promotions, billboards, leaflets, brochures and other such marketing materials.
Anyone can write but not everyone can capture the right tone to persuade customers to act in order to turn website visits or product promotions into sales and engagement.
There are several factors a business should consider when looking to hire a Copywriter:
Does the writer's portfolio align with the type of copy their business needs?
Is the writer able to conduct the level of research needed to produce relevant and persuasive copy or content?
Is the writer able to embed key words for Search Engine Optimisation within their copy?
WHAT ABOUT CONTENT WRITING?
Content writing differs from copywriting because content is more concerned with providing information and engagement with the audience or customer base of a business.
Content writing refers to website content, blogs, e-mails, social media posts, articles and more. Search Engine Optimisation is just as important in content writing as it is in copywriting.
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION (SEO)
We have mentioned SEO a couple of times and simply put, SEO refers to using keywords within content or copy to increase the visibility and ranking of a website within a search engine.
In other words, if I search for a product of service on Google, the websites with the most effective SEO embedded within their content and copy will appear in the earlier pages of search results.
If you're like me, you tend to only look to the first couple of pages of search engine results and choose a website to open from there. The more effective the SEO, the more visible the webpage and this helps to drive traffic to the website, giving exposure to the business and its products/services.
